Status
Amendment 3 to BS 7671:2018 is in force. It was published in 2022 and introduced changes to consumer units, arc fault detection, and smart device requirements.
What Changed
Consumer Units
The amendment introduced requirements for metal enclosures for consumer units in domestic premises, following concerns about fire risk from plastic enclosures. This change addressed findings from fire investigations where plastic consumer unit enclosures had contributed to fire spread.
Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDDs)
AFDDs were recommended for certain circuits, particularly in residential installations where arc fault detection provides additional protection against electrical fires. The amendment provided guidance on where AFDDs should be considered and their application.
Smart Device Requirements
Updated requirements for smart devices and connected equipment integrated into electrical installations, addressing the growing prevalence of smart home technology.
