Primary Safety & Legal Enactments

Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 (EAWR)S.I. 1989/635

Imposes strict legal duties on employers, duty holders, and employees. Key regulations include Reg 4 (systems to be safe), Reg 12 (means of cutting off power), Reg 13 (safe isolation), Reg 14 (work on or near live conductors prohibited except in extreme conditions), and Reg 16 (competence of persons).

Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER)S.I. 1998/2306

Mandates that all machinery and electrical work equipment is suitable for its intended purpose, maintained in an efficient state and working order, and equipped with suitable control systems and emergency stops.

Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR)S.I. 2002/2776

Requires employers to assess the risks of fires and explosions arising from dangerous substances (e.g. flammable gases, solvent vapours, conductive combustible dusts) and classify hazardous zones (Zones 0, 1, 2 for gases / Zones 20, 21, 22 for dusts).

BS 7671:2018+A3:2024 / A4IET Wiring Regulations

The national standard for the safety of electrical installations in the UK (low voltage up to 1000V AC). Governs automatic disconnection of supply (ADS), cable sizing, earthing & bonding, and special locations (Sections 701-722).

BS EN 60204-1:2018Safety of Machinery — Electrical Equipment

Applies to electrical, electronic and programmable equipment of industrial machinery. Defines Stop Categories (0, 1, 2), main switch-disconnector requirements (§5.3), control circuits (PELV 24V DC §9.1), and protection against spontaneous restart (§7.5).

BS EN 60204-32:2008Machinery Safety — Hoisting & Cranes

Specific requirements for cranes, hoists, winches and material handling systems. Enforces slip ring rotor resistor interlocks, fail-safe electro-hydraulic thruster brakes, and regenerative overspeed protection.

BS EN 61439-1 / 2Low-Voltage Switchgear Assemblies

Arc Fault Detection Device

A microprocessor-based protective device that analyses voltage and current waveforms for high-frequency signatures characteristic of series or parallel electrical arcing (which standard MCBs and RCDs cannot detect).

BS 7671 Context: Mandatory under Reg 421.1.7 for higher-risk residential buildings (HRRBs), HMOs, purpose-built student accommodation, and care homes.

Core Balance Current Transformer

A toroidal magnetic ring through which all live conductors (Line and Neutral in single-phase, or L1, L2, L3, N in three-phase) pass. Under healthy conditions, the vector sum of currents is zero. An earth fault creates net imbalance magnetic flux that induces a trip voltage in the secondary sensing winding.

Circuit Protective Conductor

A protective conductor connecting exposed-conductive-parts of equipment to the main earthing terminal (MET), providing the return fault path for automatic disconnection of supply (ADS).

An automated safety device monitoring phase-to-neutral voltage. If the supply PEN conductor breaks on a PME supply, line-to-neutral voltage shifts outside permissible limits (< 207V or > 253V), and the device isolates all live conductors AND the earth terminal within 5 seconds (BS 7671 Reg 722.411.4.1).
