Emergency lighting is a life-safety critical system governed by BS 5266-1,BS EN 1838, and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. When normal mains illumination fails, emergency lighting must activate automatically within 5 seconds to allow safe evacuation and prevent panic.

System Categories: Maintained vs Non-Maintained

  • Non-Maintained (NM): Luminaires illuminate ONLY when the local normal lighting circuit fails. Standard choice for commercial offices, warehouses, and industrial corridors.
  • Maintained (M): Luminaires remain illuminated continuously as normal lighting and switch to internal battery backup upon power loss. Mandatory in public entertainment venues, cinemas, theatres, and licensed premises where ambient light is dimmed.
  • Sustained / Combined: Contains two lamps - one powered from mains for normal lighting, and a separate emergency lamp running from battery.

Illuminance (Lux Level) Requirements (BS EN 1838)

The minimum light levels along escape routes and open areas:

  • Escape Routes (up to 2m wide): Minimum 1 Lux along the central floor line; 0.5 Lux across the central 50% band.
  • Open Area / Anti-Panic Lighting (> 60 m² floor area): Minimum 0.5 Lux at floor level.
  • High-Risk Task Areas (e.g. rotating machinery, high-voltage switchgear): Minimum 10% of normal light level (or 15 Lux minimum) within 0.5 seconds to prevent immediate injury.
  • Mandatory Points of Emphasis: A dedicated luminaire must be located within 2 metres of each exit door, changes of direction, stairs, fire alarm call points, first aid stations, and firefighting equipment (5 Lux minimum on equipment).

Statutory Testing & Inspection Cycles (BS 5266-8)

Statutory Inspection Logbook Protocol:

Daily: Visual check that central battery power indicators are healthy.

Monthly: Short functional test (simulate mains failure via secret key-switch for a period sufficient to ensure every lamp illuminates, typically 10 to 15 minutes). Record in fire safety logbook.

Annual: Full duration discharge test (continuous 3-hour discharge test). All units must remain illuminated for the full 3 hours. Any fitting failing early requires immediate battery replacement.

Wiring Practice: Secret Key-Switches & Fire Resistance

Emergency luminaires must take their unswitched live charging supply from the same local final lighting sub-circuitthey are monitoring. Interposing a secret fish-key test switch allows testing without turning off normal office circuits. Central battery system wiring must use fire-resistant cabling (BS 5839-1 PH30 / PH120 enhanced fire performance).
